From Rev Roger Powell September 2008
September
September is the month when things seem to get going again after the summer holidays. All the meetings and commitments we put off because ‘August isn’t a good time for meetings’ now start filling diaries.
This is also an important month for the church in Chiseldon because it is the time when we celebrate our Patronal Festival. The day is September 14, Holy Cross Day, also known as the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. It commemorates, ‘in theory’, the day St Helen discovered the true cross whilst on pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
The origin of the day may be uncertain but it is good, approximately six months after Good Friday to remind ourselves of the centrality of the Cross to our faith. It is the Cross which is a symbol of our faith and the triumph of God’s love. Jesus gave us the challenge that if we are to follow him then we are take up the cross. The Cross speaks of a love that is costly, a love that is sacrificial, and a love that knows no limits.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who give so very generously to the three churches in The Ridgeway Benefice. Thank you so much for your contribution to keeping our beautiful churches open and functioning for future generations.
Fr Roger
