The Season of Lent
February 2009
By the time you read this we will well and truly be in to the season of Lent. Those of you who have given something up may by now begin to feel a little uneasy as the withdrawal symptoms start to kick in! By the same token those of you who have taken something on may wish that you hadn’t!
Whatever way you look at it, it is good and important to have those periods in our life when we look afresh at what we are doing and try to make some sense of where our life is going. This is made even more important and crucial as we go through this global financial crisis. Many people in our communities will be affected by this economic downturn and many of us will have to look again at what are priorities are for the future wellbeing of ourselves and our families.
It is important for the church to do this. That is why the Parochial Church Councils of our three churches are always looking with me at ways in which we can make our worship and the work of the church accessible to everyone. So that it is a place where people can feel a sense of peace and be given support through the difficulties they may face. The church is not here just for those who come to worship regularly or irregularly but for all of us regardless of whom we are. As Jesus says from St Matthew’s Gospel,
‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’
The services in our churches this month will not all follow the usual monthly pattern and I urge you to check elsewhere in the magazine, on our website and on the church notice boards for the times of services in each of our churches.
